Zhang Jingsheng “Dr. Sex”
March 15, 2011
In a post I am working on right now (to be published soon, after I do a massive apartment cleaning,) I talk a little bit about Zhang Jingsheng, known as “Dr. Sex” in the Republican period, and his thoughts on breast-binding (hint: he didn’t like it.) For anyone interested in Zhang and his theories on sex, I suggest this review by David Luesink of a recent dissertation titledSex, Eugenics, Aesthetics, Utopia in the Life and Work of Zhang Jingsheng (1888-1970) by Leon Antiono Rocha on the Chinese History Dissertation Reviews blog. The dissertation review blog, which is, full disclosure, run by a friend of mine and former Fulbrighter, is definitely of interest for those interested in Chinese history!

Hi there. I found your blog through CHDR. Breast-binding is a very interesting topic indeed. There is a researcher at the Institut fur Sinologie at the University of Heidelberg, Sun Liying, who is currently finishing her thesis on breasts and the female body in Republican China: http://www.sino.uni-heidelberg.de/popcult/sun.htm
Hi Leon! Your dissertation seems really interesting! I have seen that Heidelberg page but wasn’t sure if a thesis was being produced or not, thanks for letting me know! Do you have Sun Liying’s contact info? I would be interested in speaking with her.
You can find her contact details on this page: http://www.sino.uni-heidelberg.de/popcult/index.htm#members
I have one of her forthcoming publications on nudity here, but it may be better if you ask her directly for a copy yourself.
