Old City Antiques Market

February 5, 2011

Almost two months ago (ahh!) I visited a bunch of antiques shops in the Old City (near Yu Garden) section of Shanghai. The shops range from legitimate to bizarre to tourist traps, although none of these shops yielded any success in finding breast-binding materials.

However, one cafe had an odd display that was meant to mimic a woman’s living quarter as it would have been in the Republican period.

Singer sewing machine and shoes for natural feet. A reminder that I should start looking into manufacturing, the spread of sewing machines, and changes in clothing production!

Vanity with framed newspaper clippings

Close up of the products on the vanity – rather blurry image, I apologize!

Framed clipping with images of high heels, which was to the side of the vanity.
